Dear Mr Allen,
St Georges Theatre, 49 Tufnell Park Road, Islington:
LBC application for demolition of link between church
and bell tower, construction of new 2-storey linking building
with new stage and seating balcony to interior of church,
new fence to perimeter of new building
Thank you for bringing the above application to the attention
of the Society and for providing copies of the submitted
drawings. This application was considered by the Societys
Southern Buildings Committee and I write to set out their
response.
The Society welcomes the current proposal to bring the
building back into church use and is thus not opposed
in principle to the current application. However there
were two elements of the scheme which it was felt would
benefit from further work.
Firstly the drawings provided
did not include adequate information on the treatment
of the proposed new balcony. The committee thus
did not feel able to come to a view on the impact of this
element and would recommend that your Council defer a
decision until such information is available we
would be grateful for the opportunity to comment on detailed
drawings**.
Secondly, the Society feels that the new two-storey linking
building should be treated as a modern addition and thus
does not need to use the materials of the church building.
We thus would suggest that the design could revert to
using timber instead of stone for the infill panels.
Subject to consideration of these two comments the Society
would not oppose consent being granted to this application.
Yours sincerely
Dr Richard Holder

Islington Council responded to this request for further
